Faith Alone

“We hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law” (Romans 3:28).

A question that every person must ask is, “How can I, a guilty sinner, escape the punishing wrath of God?”. This question is not unique to Christians, and it knows no geographical or political boundary. It is at the heart of every conscious son and daughter of Adam.

Various religions offer an answer, requiring adherents to do this or go there. Gurus invite followers into mystical experiences and withdrawal from reality. Many Americans today simply distract themselves with empty pleasures, refusing to admit their own mortality.

One day, you will stand before the King of glory. God scrutinizes every thought, word, and deed of yours even now. Your moral and spiritual depravity is on full display, and you have nothing with which to cover yourself. Unless, of course, you wear the righteous covering of someone else.

Oh, what joy, comfort, peace, assurance, and wonder fills the heart of the one who knows that Christ is his or her righteousness! Jesus is righteous, but He was counted guilty. You are guilty, but you may be counted righteous for Christ’s sake.

This is the meaning of Sola Fide.

Scripture Alone

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Everyone believes something, and everyone acts according to their true beliefs. What is the most important thing in your life? What is your highest goal? What will happen to you after you die? Your answers to questions like these form your core beliefs, and your life will reflect what you really believe (not what you merely say you believe).

With this in mind, a very important question to ask about what you believe and do is, “Why?” Why do you believe this and not that? Why do you invest yourself here and not there?

Sola Scriptura (or Scripture Alone) is the doctrine (or teaching) which affirms that Scripture alone is God’s perfect and sufficient word to humanity. This means there is an objective and unchanging answer to the biggest “why” questions of life. Christians throughout history have understood that God’s word alone is the infallible rule of faith and practice (beliefs and actions). We praise and thank God for His sure and trustworthy word.
